The number of websites that get hacked has only been growing ever since, making the importance of website security greater than ever.  With data as one of the most important assets of a business, being secure in the online becomes more and more important every day.

Quite often, websites become unavailable due to denial-of-service attacks or displaying modified (and often damaging) information on their homepages. In other cases, millions of passwords, emails, and card details have been stolen.

Protect your customers

Malicious software can affect much more than your business. Used to infect websites, it can gather data or even hijack computer resources. A site where an attacker has gained access can be used to redirect traffic and infect visitors with malicious software, damaging both your and your client’s resources.

Reputation loss

Having security issues translates directly into a loss of clients.

With the amount of website on the internet, being a step further in terms of search engine optimization is crucial. Having security problems will make harder for your company to reach new clients.

If you are targeted as being unsafe, Google will warn your customers and restrict them from entering your website. This can even escalate to the point where your site can get blacklisted.  You can recognize the sites by seeing the display message “This site may harm your computer” in the search results. Your website will get blacklisted when it contains something harmful to your users, such as a malware.

Security means

To increase the security of your website, there are a few basics to consider putting in place.

  • SSL certificate

This will protect the sensitive data collected by your website. This is a basic website security measure, but it’s so important that popular browsers and Google and other search engines will label sites without an SSL as “insecure,” which affects both credibility and visibility.

  • Web application firewall

A WAF prevents hackers from installing malicious code onto a site and stops automated attacks. These attacks are carried out by malicious bots that automatically look for vulnerabilities they can exploit.

  • Website updates

Websites hosted on a content management system (CMS) such as WordPress are at a higher risk of compromise because of vulnerabilities and security issues found plugins and applications. These can be prevented by installing updates plugins, as they often contain the security patches that are needed.

  • Secure by design

Secure by design means designing your website to be secure from the initiation and not compromising with the security parameters while heading towards its completion. This can be done by addressing the security through measures such as continuous testing, authentication safeguards and choosing a reliable partner to develop your project with.
